Long Live De La Soul

As I write this blog post my mind is in a state of euphoria! I recall a few years ago that I purchased a shirt that read, “Thank God For Hip-Hop” and I jumped on it fast and purchased one. I’m so glad that I did because with the newest De La Soul album, Cabin In The Sky, there is one thing sure and that’s God Love s Hip-Hop!

This album is one that gives you many feelings that will take you on journey of sprituality, grieving a lost one, bopping of your head to beats to making you realize why you love hip-hop! De La has dropped so many classic albums over the years with “3 Feet and Rising” being my favorite followed by “Stakes Is High.” A group that gave me one of my first introductions to hip-hop and a group that I have followed religiously over the years. I can recall that last time I saw the three of them perform was in San Francisco. I just happened to be on a work trip and was walking down the street and based the venue and looked up and saw their name on the marquee! I immediately went to the box office and purchased a ticket to that show and had the time of my live. That was around 2013 or 2014, if my memory serves me.

I’ve always had a connection to them dudes from Long Island albeit, I’m from Baltimore but I just connected with them for some reason. Like many I was devastated when Dave aka Trugoy the Dove passed away. I felt like a piece of me died as well. Our connections with artists and their music plays a major role in our lives. We grow up listening to songs that become essential pieces in life soundtrack. De La most definitely has songs in my life soundtrack. That is why listening to their latest album felt so bittersweet knowing that magic number of three is no longer.

As we all age, we must come to grips that death is inevitable but it is still hard to grasp the fact that our hero’s are mortal and they too will pass along. I am grateful that Pos and Maseo put out Cabin In The Sky as way for us all to say goodbye to Dave. De La Soul Is Dead is another great album by them but one thing is for sure…De La will never die!
